Profiles In Business excellence: Outrageous

Elizabeth Martin

“We’re a little out of the way, but our customers seek us out,” he said.
Paul’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2003 when he was shown the perfect location.
“It was a start up in every sense of the word,” Paul explained. “I found my way to Scranton through Ken Marquis, who had purchased and renovated the old Casey Laundry building.”
Unsure of what type of business to open, but uninterested in a paper-cutter gift shop, Paul opted to combine two of life’s little pleasures— shopping and drinking coffee.
Today, Outrageous’s gift shop is filled with trendy baubles and unique, sterling silver and fashion jewelry and accessories. While browsing, customers can enjoy a perfectly brewed cup of coffee and a sumptuous goodie or soup and a sandwich. Outrageous even offers bag lunches to go. Paul is joined by three employees who go above and beyond for his customers.
“We’re Canal Street meets Scranton— we offer a unique product line and you don’t break the bank,” he said. “We also take it on the road with jewelry and accessory parties.”
Customers can also venture upstairs to Anthology, a bookstore with new and used offerings.
“The city of Scranton was very helpful in getting the bookstore up and running,” he added.
Paul’s family plays a role in the success of Outrageous, and in particular, his sister, Maria, who manages the Shavertown location.
“Maria makes it possible to exist in two locations,” Paul explained.
Paul believes in giving back to the community. In addition to participating in First Friday, in Scranton, he also volunteers with the Back Mountain Economic Development Council.
“We are always willing to support our high schools, and every month we feature the work of local artists,” Paul said.
“If you are looking for a haven from the world, go to Outrageous,” said customer Roseann Martinetti, of Scranton. “There is a welcoming, relaxing, and fun atmosphere there.  Paul is very knowledgeable and has a superb sense of humor. Affordable gift items are everywhere. You can enjoy a selection from its tantalizing menu, sit by the window reading, or have a conversation with a friend.”
