Throughout the United States, Northeastern Pennsylvania's four-year colleges and universities are known for their solid reputation for excellence.
Locally, King's College is honored year after year for its superb academic record; Wilkes University continuously boasts rises in its freshman class enrollment; and College Misericordia has instituted an innovative curriculum.
In Lackawanna County, one only needs to travel a few miles to reach the University of Scranton and Marywood University, and Penn State's regional campuses speak for themselves.
But there is one other local college that has made unbelievable strides from its humble beginning as a one-building institution nestled in the shadow of the Hotel Sterling and squeezed in between the campuses of King's and Wilkes.
Spread throughout a large section of Nanticoke, Luzerne County Community College has beautiful and modern buildings complete with hi-tech equipment and space to guarantee continued growth. It now triumphs an enrollment of more than 16,000 students in more than 100 fields of learning.
LCCC's mainly two-year program has enhanced the higher educational reputation of the area. Many of LCCC's students have matriculated at King's, Wilkes, and Misericordia to complete their educations.
One of the great pluses of LCCC is its affordable tuition. At $77 a credit, LCCC provides an opportunity for students to give higher education "the old college try." Its many off-campus sites spread throughout several counties and its flexible and varied schedules allow working people to get their associate degrees in evening classes and near their homes.
Northeastern Pennsylvania's colleges and universities offer something for everyone preparing for higher education. By partnering with the efforts of LCCC, King's, Wilkes, the U, Misericordia, Marywood, and Penn State will surely continue to grow in stature and further build the reputation of our area's academic institutions.
