It takes a lot to stay in business for any period of time, but 120 years? Now that's impressive.
Lynn Ahmad, fourth-generation owner of Bartikowsky Jewelers, is proud that the jewelry store has withstood a flood, time, and the lean years of Wilkes-Barre.
Lynn's great-grandfather, Max Bartikowsky, founded the business in 1887. The store has stayed within the family since- run by her grandfather, Bernard Bartikowsky, her father, Jay Karnofsky, and her uncles, Bart and Max Bartikowsky. Max is the current president, her husband, Mac, is vice president, and Lynn is secretary/treasurer.
She attributes the store's long-lasting success to several factors, one being a premier location. Bernard Bartikowsky bought the building, a former supermarket, in 1978. The generous-sized parking lot and location just off Public Square is a godsend.
Lynn touts her family's strong work ethic and business sense, particularly that of her grandmother and role model, Camilla Bartikowsky, who was always involved in the business.
Another reason for the store's longevity is the quality of both service and products it offers. Lynn and her husband, a diamond specialist and jewelry designer, have close relationships with their employees, most of whom have been with the store for years. The store provides the unique service of jewelry redesigning. At Bartikowsky Jewelers, customers have the luxury of brainstorming with an in-store professional to redesign any jewelry piece they choose.
Even after more than a century, the owners are continually updating and adding inventory, and efforts to maintain the store's contemporary look and feel is ongoing. Wide price ranges and an assortment of items including the standard, high-quality diamonds and jewels, as well as
